What documentation do you need for Amtrak? ›

Examples of acceptable forms of ID include: State or provincial driver's license. Passport. Official government-issued identification (federal, state, city or county government or foreign government)

Acceptable Documentation Includes:

Membership card from a disability organization. Letter from a physician. Medicare card, if under 65. Veteran's Administration ID with “Service Connected”

Connecting Trains

Call Amtrak 1-800-USA-RAIL or your travel agent if your planned itinerary includes a shorter connection. A guaranteed connection does not ensure that such a connection will always be made. In the case of a missed guaranteed connection, Amtrak will provide assistance at Amtrak's discretion.

In most circ*mstances, you must purchase a ticket before you board a train. Most trains require reservations and you should not board reserved trains without a reservation. Passengers who do so are not guaranteed a seat and may be instructed to get off the train at the next station stop.

It is recommended, but not required, to print out an updated copy of your eTicket (or obtain a new copy from a ticket agent or an Amtrak kiosk) after you have modified your itinerary.

Passengers with Disabilities Save 15%

Adult passengers with a disability can receive a 15% savings on Pacific Surfliner, Capitol Corridor and San Joaquins travel year-round — this is an additional 5% savings off the 10 percent discount off the adult rail fare for passengers with disabilities.

If you have 240 months of creditable service you are eligible at any age, or after age 60 if you have 120-239 months of creditable railroad service. If you have less than 120 months (10 years) you are not eligible. The disability can also incorporate a “Total Disability” annuity.

You may bring your own food and beverages onboard for consumption at your seat or private Sleeping Car accommodations. However, you can only consume food and beverages purchased in Dining and Lounge Cars in those cars. Personal food and beverages are allowed in the upper level of Superliner Sightseer Lounges.

Older cars (predating Amtrak's formation in 1970) have no capability to retain waste. Recently constructed cars are fitted with either full-retention, or short-term retention systems which dump waste on the track at speeds over 25 mph.

Just hop on the next train, so long as your ticket doesn't have any restrictions on which company you can use. In this case, you might need to stick to the operator on the ticket. If you have an Advance ticket, you can get the next train operated by the same company that's specified on your ticket.

Unless specific seats are assigned, seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Seat availability is not guaranteed until we provide you with a reservation confirmation. On unreserved trains there are no guaranteed seats.

The conductor will place a destination ticket in the holder above your seat. He will usually remind you within 30 minutes of your stop. If you are asleep, he will awaken you. I assume the sleeping car attendants do the same thing.

According to the website ID policy for Amtrak, you may either produce one government issued photo ID for identification to ride with Amtrak or two identification documents, one who which is government-issued (but its kinda unclear from how the current policy is worded if this really is the case).

Checked baggage service is available at a number of our stations and on many trains and Thruway Services. Not all trains or locations are equipped to handle checked baggage. Before you travel, make sure to check and see if your train and origin and destination stations accept checked baggage.
